The Campaign Link Survival Guide

For marketers who tag their links and still can't see the results

Your links are working. Your reports just can't see them.

You post the link, people click, and GA4 files the visit under "Unassigned" like it fell out of the sky. This short course shows you exactly why, and how to build links Google can't misfile.

The link that got me

We had a nice, tidy habit. Every link we posted in our Skool community carried the same tags, spelled the same way, made by the same tool. Organized. Consistent. Very professional.

utm_source=skool & utm_medium=community

GA4 filed every one of those visits under Unassigned. People came. The report had no idea from where.

The reason is small and a little infuriating. GA4 sorts every tagged visit against a fixed list of rules, and it has never heard of the word "community." Skool isn't on Google's list of social sites either. So the rules ran out, the visit landed in the "no idea" bucket, and nothing warned us. Not GA4. Not the tool that built the link.

Then it got better. Links tagged for X, Threads and our own blog were falling through too. LinkedIn and Facebook were fine, because Google knows those names. That's the trap: it works for the big platforms, so you assume it works everywhere, and the smaller channels you care about most quietly disappear.

You've probably tried a fix already

Most of us have. I tried all four of these. Each one works right up until a human touches it.

The naming doc

Works until the new freelancer posts at five on a Friday and makes up a medium. The doc didn't stop them. It never does.

The locked spreadsheet

Dropdowns, rules, the works. Half the team goes around it. The other half copies last month's link and changes one word.

Google's free URL builder

Type "LinkedIn" with a capital and "Social Organic" with a space. It builds the link without a word, even though Google's own docs say capitals make a different source.

A link shortener

It shortens whatever you typed. It has never heard of GA4. If the tags were wrong going in, they're wrong coming out, just shorter.

Every one of those fixes happens after. By then the visits are already filed, and filed visits don't move. The report is too late. The link is the moment.

What changes when you get the link right

You open GA4 and the numbers line up with what you actually did. The Skool post shows up as social. The newsletter shows up as email. Facebook is one row, not five rows spelled five different ways.

That sounds small. It isn't. It's the difference between guessing which channel earned the sale and knowing it, which is the difference between spending next month's time and money on the thing that works or on the thing that's loudest.

And you stop doing the Monday-morning detective work, squinting at a report and trying to remember what you posted last Tuesday. You build the link right once, at the moment you make it, and the report takes care of itself.

Every lesson ends with something you actually do

No homework for the sake of homework. Each lesson closes with one Quick Win: a single action you can take on a real campaign link before you close the tab.

  • Build and save your first correctly tagged link, all five fields, no capitals.
  • Paste it into a free GA4 checker and see which channel Google will file it under, before you post it.
  • Take a link you've already shared, find out why it went missing, and fix it.
  • Run the end-to-end test on a short link or QR code so you know the tags survive the trip.

The workbooks match the videos page for page. Print them or fill them in on screen, whichever you'll actually do.

Who this is for

  • Solo marketers and small agencies who post the same offer across five or six channels and want to know which one paid.
  • Anyone who has opened GA4, seen a fat "Unassigned" row, and quietly closed the tab.
  • Teams where more than one person makes links, and nobody spells "facebook" the same way twice.

Not for you if you're looking for a full GA4 setup course. This one does a single job: makes sure every link you post gets counted where it belongs.

Questions people ask

Do I need to be a GA4 expert?

No. If you can find your GA4 reports, you can follow this. The course explains the rules in plain words and shows you where to look.

I don't use GA4. Is it still useful?

Partly. The naming rules and the redirect testing help with any analytics tool. The channel rules in Modules 3 and 4 are specific to GA4.

How long does it take?

About an hour and 49 minutes of video. Most people watch it in an evening and do the Quick Wins the next morning.

Will this fix the visits that already went to Unassigned?

No, and nothing can. GA4 doesn't re-file visits after the fact. That's exactly why the course focuses on getting the link right before you post it.

How do I get access?

Right after checkout the course appears in your VidPenguin Productions library, and you get an email with your login.

Stop guessing which post paid off
